I now know that my only bottle of Koloa Toasted Coconut Rum will be extremely hard to replace when it finally runs out because no one wants to pay $35 for 80 proof coconut rum except us. So, I got on a brief quest to find a half way decent replacement before that time comes. Presently, Blue Chair Bay has a strong enough coconut taste to satisfy my needs, so I compared this Don Q Coconut to the Blue Chair Bay Coconut.

This one is not syrupy sweet like Blue Chair Bay, but it also has less alcohol and more subdued coconut flavors that don't even show up in the aroma. Depending upon what you want in a tropical drink, either one would work. For those who hate coconut and just need to add it to a drink just to say that coconut is in there, this will suffice and also at a budget price. There is also no chemical or antiseptic flavor like what is found in many of the other so-called coconut rums.

Update: I could not drink this stuff neat, so I added lots of ice. That is when it's true evil taste appears. I had to pour the remaining half bottle down the toilet, which I rarely do. Basically, there is no hope for this one. Good rums get higher ratings over time and bad ones like this one just sink.

I wasn't expecting to like this much, as I'm not a big fan of the Don Q Limon. However, this is a very nice coconut rum!

Smells and tastes of sweet coconut, with a little something fruity - maybe a touch of lemon macaron.

Weak at only 21%abv.

An above average coconut rum. I was pleasantly surprised!

Not saying it tastes bad, but this is a liquor and liquor can be made to taste any ol way. It’s an alternative to Malibu.

We love this one. Great mixing rum with great flavors. Fun to try.

Lots of fake coconut here. White clear pour. Kind of like Malibu, maybe slightly less bad. Very sweet finish. Good for a lazy man's Pina colada if you mixed it with pineapple juice.

Tasted May 11, 2021 at Laka Lono
I will point out that not everyone wants their rum to taste like a shoe. Some of us enjoy a fine dessert rum. And that is why Don Q Coconut exists.
This is a candy-sweet rum that should never be consumed by a coconut-hater and probably also not diabetics.
Its sweetness is ridiculous, in the best of all ways.

Tasted at Laka Lono on 10/3/21. Aroma of Tropicana suntan lotion. At 21% ABV, is this the MadDog 20/20 of rums? Super sweet. Coconut candy. Mangos. Quick and unsatisfying finish. For mixing only, if at that.

Smooth sweet and strong coconut flavor. My favorite coconut rum!

My liquor store was out of sugar island, so I gave this a try. It’s in drinkable in my opinion. It’s tastes like lotion, not suntan lotion, just lotion. Disgusting.

It ok but not a super good tasting rum. In a pinch may be ok for mixing.

I bought this as a mixer for any recipes that called for Malibu. This has a nice flavor and aroma, and the price was right. However, like Malibu and other flavored rums in this class, the alcohol % is low.
