Diplomatico Reserva rum is distilled from molasses using both copper pot and column stills. The rum is then aged in small oak casks for between 2 and 8 years before blending and bottling.
the Diplomatico distillery is located on the northern slopes of the Andes mountains in Venezuela. The area has a rich rum history dating to 1896,
Diplomatico Reserva 8 40% (Venezuela)
Eye: Amber with copper tones
Nose: Opens with pronounced elements of grapefruit, old dry wood and molasses. It continues with weak honey, cotton and a hint of orange-zest, fat fish oil, and cheap praline that reminds me of light cooking chocolate. It is no immediate love, I can tell you that. It is so obviously colored, forced and juvenile. To me it smells like drink base.
Mouth: Could I be wrong? No, it even taste like drink base. It has that thin eau-de-vie taste that I dislike so much in a sipping rom. It is young and light and carries few own flavors. It is also short which is actually a forgiving feature in this case. The sweetness comes crawling after a while as do the vanilla. A weak buzz on the palate from the alcohol burn which is neither good or bad. Then a little caramel, honey and melted white sugar with faint hints of pear. That´s it folks! (30 minutes in some soot enters but it really doesn´t add anything.
Reaction: For some reason I had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, there is no hope and it can´t be compared with anything I have rated so far. It doesn´t even evolve in the glass which is a first. It actually degrades in the glass which is a trademark of any bad product. As sipping rum it has to be the worst yet but that does not mean it isn´t great in a drink. I know nothing about that as I don´t usually enjoy rom based drinks.
Price: 335 SEK
Tasted: 2016, in a Riedel Sommelier Cognac XO glass at room temperature.
I used to sell this a while back in an old bar i worked in and remember trying it around the time i was really falling in love with rum (Dont get me wrong ive always loved rum, but theres a time when your growing up and its no longer 'ooh i like rum, ill ave a rum n coke' and it becomes 'seriously i friggin LOVE rum let me see your selection, line up those 6 i need to try them all!!') as i was saying, it was a small place and this was probably the best rum in there! Opens with almost a fruit brulee integrating the caramel, citrus, light spice and dried fruits but lasts on the palate leaving you with a creamy, chocolatety sweetness that goes on so long and so smooth. We like!
From Venezuela, this very value price rum demonstrates some very sweet notes on nose. You can smell some fruitiness, vanilla, toffee and again sugar cane sweet such as honey.
On the glass you can see a mahogany colour, kinda density and decent legs. The taste is kinda smooth, delicious and sweet of course.
Such as the Diplomatico Reserva exclusiva, but with less woody.
This rum taste like rum which I really like. Some rum taste more like the bourbon barrels they age them in. I like the smooth rum flavour with an edgy finish.
This is a great rum. I love Diplomatico!
Not quite as sweet or smooth as the Diplomatico Exclusiva, but still great - especially for the incredibly low price of only $19.99 (Total Wines & More). Smells and tastes of toffee, vanilla, oak, and molasses. A fantastic rum which deserves a great score.
There's some sweetness there, but it's topped with quite edgy alcoholic taste.
Since Exclusiva is my favorite sipping rum, I decided to purchase its younger sibling @$25. Figuring if it's even close to the older, it's money well spent. Diplomatico did not disappoint! The nose is similar of molasses, toffee and caramel. The difference is in the palate of these two rums. This one hasn't aged as much and has a tad bit more heat / burn where as the older does not. This is easily opened up with the addition of a single cube of ice. Magically, it unfolds into a truly wonderful experience eith no burn. My bro-in law who is not a rum drinker, sat down with me over the 4th and had 3-4 fingers and a cube of ice each. He was amazed by this rum and again by the price thinking it was more than what it was. Commented he would have loved to have had a cigar to enjoy with it. We drank better than 3/4's of the bottle. This is a great gateway rum to quality sippers!
Trouvé à un très bon prix (26,90€), l'entrée de gamme dans la famille Diplomatico est bon!
Assurément moins agréable que son grand frère, il saura ravir la plupart d'entre nous!
À boire seul ou en cocktail...
Definitely worse than the Reserva Exclusiva.. boring and flat taste.. not worth the price, even though it is not an expensive bottle
...this was a gift to me long time ago.
I was not to excited about, probadly due to the fact my heart belonged to the A.H. Riise run in my shelf...
All I really remember was the very alcoholic taste to it...
Nice, smooth rum with a sweet vanilla taste. Still prefer the reserva exclusiva.
From the affordable Dipllomatico rum offer, the best price/value choice is for sure the "green bottle" Reserva Exclusiva. This Reserva rum is missing the smoothness, the aroma richness and the nice feeling of the Exlusiva rum... it is simply too harsh for my apetite.
On the other hand compared to other younger/cheaper rums (5/8 years old) it may be a good choice. But in that case I would suggest something like Plantation Barbados...
Tasted the diplomatico Reserva and his big brother Reserva Exlusiva side to side. Surprisingly different. While good and worth it, the Reserva exclusiva was better, more complex, with caramel notes, while this one had more "alcohol" notes and a relatively strong cigar notes.
Did not know what to expect, just saw it in the store and bought it, but it is really nice. Makes me want to buyt the more expensive brother, i read it is even better, and as this one is allready great quality, i can only imagine...
un excelent mix cu arome de vanilie si caramel, cu usoara tenta de migdale.... superb
I really liked the flavours of this rum, not quite as good as the reserva exclusiva but still warm flavoured, went down a treat with Coke and ice.
9 for the price, can't get something that smooth for that cheap, awesome rum, good son to the exclusiva
While a little harsh, this is standout for it's multiple amazing flavors that shift gear with just the first sip!
Get's better as you have more also. Excited to try the Exclusiva
Good drinkable rum, but nothing special as i remember.
Not as good as the Exclusiva, it's still a very decent taste. Here also the hints of caramel and vanilla are a fine get together. Where the Exclusiva is smooth, this one has some sharp edges. This bottle was a nice tasting, but I'd still spend a bit more to get the Exclusiva.
In bunul stil Diplomatico, arome subtile, un rom fin, desăvârșit. O alegere potrivită oricand! Doar "on the rocks"
Smooth, mellow.... everything an amber should be........
Cekal jsem vic, tento rum kdyz jsem naposledy pil mi prisel daleko vyRaznejsi a chutnejsi, ale mozna to taky bylo temi 3 - mi lajnami ko
ksu, co jsem pred tim mel :)
It took me a while to add this to my collection; I guess I bought into some of the negative reviews.
Pound for pound, it holds its own versus the exclusive reserva.
I would recommend this as a good transition rum for someone looking to shed the ice cubes and go neat.
