smooth rum , but for that price there are better choices
This an epic Colombian rum, a well kept secret: it's smooth and have some notes of vanilla and caramel... it's also a good purchase: 40 us a bottle.. try it.
Even if you are not rum expert, you will feel taste and know the difference between this 20-years old and his younger brother. As I don´t like 12-year old too much, this older version is much better and you don´t need any ice to tastes good. It has nice caramel, honey, toffe taste with a little bit strong start from the beginning but very soft and complex.
Chocolate and coffee in flavor and aroma, caramel and vanilla in the background
Impressive black packaging and black bottle to match. The rum had a dark mahogany colour and a different nose of coffee and anise. It has a complex taste matching the nose with a light burn. I paid $85 after the LCBO dropped the price by $30.
As expected for a 20 year rum, this is very good. I have other favorites that I have paid much less for, but this Columbian rum is worth going back to now and then. Once it is gone, I will not replace it because there are so many more out there to try.
I got a bottle of this at Dorignacs in New Orleans, LA on a major rum buying spree (they have a lot of rums I never saw locally). The aroma in the bottle is wonderful...definitely caramel overtones that unfortunately do not transfer over as well in regards to flavor. Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent rum just not worth the asking amount for the solera aged rum. I think about $10-$15 less would be better. However with that said the rum has more oak flavor than one would expect from a 20 year rum...even a solera system rum but it's not harsh either. It has a mild sweetness and a warmth in the back of the throat...no burn. It is a complex rum and it is SO close to a 9 but I just couldn't put it in that category. Maybe it will grow on me. On a more lighthearted note, I do like the design of the bottle...I could see Captain Jack Sparrow grabbing this bottle. Definitely pirate-esque.
The twelve year old, grown up. Whatever good can be said about the Dictador 12 years, can be said of the 20, in a higher degree. This is not a mixer. Sip it. Very pleasant aroma and smooth on the tongue, nice and sweet the way I like'm, very much in the Latin tradition of rum making. Only wish the pleasant taste would last longer on the palate.
Coffee taste - a must have in my bar
There is a hint of tobacco and a touch of tar. Overall though its mostly sweet.
"It has a reasonable amount of alcohol burn to reassure you it is a 40% spirit. It’s more like a kind of sherried flavoured vodka. I’m sure such a drink exists somewhere."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Alright, let’s get down to it. This is an amazing rum. Granted it my first experience with Dictador, I am very thrilled. Beautiful amber coloring. The nose has very distinct notes of caramel, vanilla, cinnamon, and sherry. Very smooth on the tongue with chocolate, nutmeg, and vanilla. Smooth and dry finish with little to no burn on the finish
