After reading reviews from "experts" proclaiming this to be the best coconut rum on the market, I knew I had to order a bottle for my wife who loves coconut rum (ever since she sampled Ron Ricardo coconut rum in the Bahamas). This coconut rum comes in at 80 proof which is higher than most coconut rums. This rum is flavored with natural coconut and you can definitely smell the coconut in the bottle. Not a coconut extract smell but a real, freshly-grated coconut aroma. Whereas the coconut rums I have tasted thus far overdo it on the coconut flavor, the Koloa coconut seems to have found the proper balance between the sugar cane flavor and the coconut flavor. They complement each other rather than the coconut overpowering it. The thing I found most interesting is that even though it is 80 proof there is hardly any burn to this rum but don't let it fool you. It will sneak up on you and kick you square in the butt if you are not careful. This could work as a sipping rum if you really like coconut. This also works beautifully in tropical drinks calling for coconut and rum.
If there is a better coconut rum anywhere in the world, I'd like to know about it but I have a feeling one does not exist. For coconut rum aficionados, this is the ultimate.

I am not a fan of coconut so I have never had a coconut rum that I have liked, but now found one. The coconut aroma is definitely there, but the coconut doesn't over power the taste. I only had one glass and I would love to get a bottle of this stuff so that I could give it another try. If you like coconut rum, you have to try koloa coconut.

No matter what brand of coconut rum you're drinking, I guarantee you it's nowhere nearly as delicious and authentic as this Koloa Coconut. The stuff at your local liquor store is made with parrot urine and old cigarettes. This rum, on the other hand, is made with real coconut and real rum. Nothing else comes close. You owe it to yourself to do whatever it takes to make this rum a part of your collection. Moving to Hawaii is a reasonable option.

To be honest I'm really not much on flavored rum. Aside from Plantation Stiggins Fancy Pineapple and this I'd rather just enjoy my rum rum-flavored. When most people coconut rum day think Mailibu. If you desire something sweet like Malibu (at only 21 APV it's more liqueur that rum) you may be disappointed. I, on the other hand, was pleasantly surprised by just how good this tasted. At 80 proof it's an actual rum, unlike most coconut rums out there. The sweet stuff is usually around 40 proof and the others come in around 70 proof. I've had a few and many are quite tasty. But this stuff is the real deal. I highly recommend, even if flavored rums aren't your thing.

This is the best coconut rum I've tried, and I've had a lot. A great coconut flavor, and a perfect strength at 40%abv.
I only rate it a 7 because I much prefer aged rums to flavored rums. If you like coconut rum, it doesn't get any better than this!

I mean it does taste good but it is still coconut flavoured. Quality but expensive. I suppose if you drink a lot of coconut flavoured rum then this is the top shelf.

Definiitely an improvement over Cruzan Coconut. Solid taste, smooth enough, and mixes well.

I was really excited to try this coconut rum after reading all of the glowing reviews. At $40 a bottle, this is seriously overpriced. For value alone, I have to dock a point. Good, strong coconut flavor, but it still has a slight artificial aftertaste on the end. Is it as bad as most coconut rums? No, it's not even in the same ballpark. If you love coconut, this is an excellent mixer to give cocktails a tropical vibe, but at this price point there are much better rums to be had. I definitely won't be sad using this bottle, but I won't be buying it again. If you want a sippable coconut rum that's also fantastic for mixing, Siesta Key Toasted Coconut is still my favorite.

When I was in Kauai exactly one year ago, I could have visited the distillery located on an expansive plantation only a couple of miles away from where I was staying. Instead, I chose their cheapest white rum on the last day to be consumed in my hotel room and was not impressed at all. Needless to say, I did not bring home a bottle of this toasted coconut rum and only found out about it's high rating once I got back home. I finally found a bottle back at home.
I also found a bottle of the highly rated Siesta Key Toasted Coconut Rum, so this Koloa Toasted Coconut Rum was tasted in a side by side test against the one from Siesta Key. Two different animals! This one is clear and the Siesta Key is amber. This one is 80 proof and the Siesta Key is 70 proof. This one only has toasted coconut, but the Siesta Key adds honey, which also lowers the proof.
Tasting this Koloa Toasted Coconut Rum neat is the ultimate tropical island experience. One could be surrounded by ugly skyscrapers, but just put on some old time Hawaiian music or steel pan Caribbean music, close your eyes, and then sip on this rum. You will be transported to memories of crystal clear blue waters in the tropics with breezes shaking the leaves of the coconut palm trees. No other rum is capable of evoking this feeling!!! Now for those who hate the taste of coconut, the much more subdued taste from Siesta Key should also work. Since I have never encountered bees on tropical beaches, adding honey to the Siesta Key Toasted Coconut Rum just does not evoke the same feelings as this Koloa.
Both are very good toasted coconut rums but I only rate this one as as a 7 because it still did not quite make it into my top 10 with ratings of 8 to 10. Basically, if you want very pronounced coconut flavor, choose this Kola. If you want your coconut flavor subdued, then choose the Siesta Key. Both can be served neat, on the rocks, or mixed.
Update: For those of you who love Almond Joy and Mounds candy bars, I now present the adult version drink of those. Since Vizcaya Cristal is the only light rum to have after notes of chocolate and vanilla, this one was chosen for this unique drink. Simply mix equal parts Koloa Toasted Coconut Rum with Vizcaya Cristal Rum and ABSOLUTELY NO SUBSTITUTES. One can sip it as an 80 proof candy bar drink or add ice or or blend it with Haagen Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream. If you want some almond flavor, just add a dash of Amaretto.
And whatever you do, don't get any crazy ideas like I tried with pouring 8-9 ounces of this rum into an empty Fiji water bottle to stick in the freezer for a few days. My dream of bringing this ice cold rum to one of my favorite nearby islands for the day only obliterated the coconut flavors. Good thing that I checked on the taste before making the trek. Luckily, after allowing the bottle to get back to island temperatures, the coconut flavors returned. This rum needs to be served neat at tropical island temperatures. Why of course! It was distilled in Kauai!
Update March 24, 2020: I have since found a much better coconut rum from Brinley Gold Shipwreck from St. Kitts. No contest! The St. Kitts coconut rum blows this one from Kauai out of the water. On the rocks, I actually had to add a couple of drops of Angostura Bitters to make this one drinkable. Sorry, but no more rum from Koloa in Kauai for me. I absolutely love that island, but not any of their rums.
