The Riviere du Mat XO is a Rhum from the island of La Reunion in the Indian Ocean and is distilled directly from sugar cane juice. The Rhum is then stored in French oak barrels for at least 6 years. It is bottled with 42% alcohol. The reddish Berstein-coloured Rhum is presented in a simple but noble bottle. The Distillery Riviere du Mat only bottles 80,000 bottles a year and the XO is also limited. The Rhum has no additives.

The Rhum is a force in the nose. I was very positively surprised. Fruity, floral notes are directly recognizable. Grassy Agricole elements pair with vanilla and some oak. The Rhum makes a point landing in the bouquet. On the palate and especially on the tongue, the Rhum is surprisingly sharp. After the first sip I let the Rhum breathe another 15min. The sharpness, however, remains present. But without alcohol Notes. Otherwise, the Rhum is rather dry. Slightly sweet spicy aromas are to taste on the tongue. A lot of wood influence combines with light floral notes. Vanilla and also some soft smoke accompany the finish which is characterized by woody oak notes.

If the Riviere du Mat would not be so sharp on the tongue we would be talking about a premium Rhum. Whoever takes the time and can handle the sharpness will have a top product. Then it offers an intense and complex taste. No beginner Rhum. But I like it an it is limited.

Light amber in the glass,
Wild and multilayered on the nose. Wow, there meets a lot and wants to be sorted. Sweet fruits, already a little too ripe, meet harmoniously with caramel that has been heated even a little strongly. Delicious cotton candy mixed with wood wool and vanilla beans on damp moss.
On the palate also very sophisticated. A motley bunch of flavors ride rodeo on the tongue. Fruit and caramel try to hold their own on vanilla ice cream in the peaty soil. Bark, resin, freshly cut wood, moss and exotic flowers applaud the protagonists.
The finish is soft and irresistible. The wood sugar sweetness lingers on the tongue for a while, gambling with the fruit and caramel for another round.
Is this really rum? Yes it is Rhum made from molasses (Traditionnel) and not Agricole and needs an extremely long open time to develop. It also needs a good discussion to open up, but then tells you everything. Could also be a peaty whisky as well.
For explorers, advanced and connoisseurs.
For my annual rum round, theme this time: XO Rum/Rhum.

Nice one, cognac barrels (Reunion is part of France) gave to this rum some elegance, interesting nose, taste reminds me of some Savanna rums (also from Reunion), in particular that wine like taste ... but also you can say vanilla, raisins and oak, just the finish is a little bit short, but the rum is really drinkable and smooth, i give to this an 8,5 !
to this rum i will give 10 if just a little bit stronger (more flavorful) ...

Deep flavor, dry, not to sweet. Almost like a cognac. Great color.

I don't prefer agricole style, but this is one of the better ones. Aroma is weak and acrid. Taste is typical agricol "crazy" style with fruit and pepper tones.

Very good rum, with a little bit bity taste, real rum for men, not sweet.
