Was expecting a ruff expression of Palo Viejo. Surprised that the palate was smooth with caramel and vanilla notes.
Ethanol nose, but surprised by the flavor!
Weird I’ve never tasted this staple rum from my island, since it was always $5 a bottle I was expecting lava. But right from the start I was super impressed by the nose with its hint of vanilla (and yes a bit of burn) on the taste again the vanilla taste not so sweet which I like and yes the expected burn at the finish but remedied but a final burst of vanilla. Only reason its not an 8 is because it lacks complexity very single note and slightly watered down. The burn at the end is a bit too much for being 40%abv but not off putting at ven as a sipper. in a nutshell it’s a Steven Segal movie, so caca it’s actually crema (cream = awesome)
The old cliche “you get what you pay for” is spot on with this rum. You are getting a basic rum that can be used to create a cocktail or mixed drink. An inexpensive rum that has no complexity or components that would allow you to enjoy this rum any other way.
I've been sipping from a couple of bottles of Havana Club Anejo 7 Anos my lovely girfriend brought home from France, and while enjoying it on its own, I've also done a few thimble-size taste comparisons with many readily available (in the U.S of A.) rums.
There are only two Palo Viejo rums to be found-the gold and the white. The 1.5 sizes are in plastic bottles, they're both absurdly cheap and are ubiquitously reviewed as "acceptable" as best. Lots of snide comments referencing college drinking, terrible hangovers, OK as a mixer, "if there is nothing else available" etc. etc.
Setting aside preconceived "truths" about the price/quality equation, I can confidently suggest that this rum is the closest to Havana Club's taste profile I've had. Here is where I'm guessing: I don't currently have a bottle of the base HC for comparison, but both the gold and especially the white have an almost identical vanilla/banana core, and the same alchohol flame ratio as Havana Club which despite it's mystique is generally not recognized as the sine qua non of rums worldwide. But it's damn good stuff and so is Palo Viejo.
YMMV, but give it a try, especially if you have some Ron Cubano to compare.
Cheers.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

We all know how chronic mooches are, so this dirt cheap rum at $6 US per liter clearance price is good to keep on hand to avoid them from invading your good rums. The burn at the beginning is the dead give away that this is a young Puerto Rican rum. I was expecting worse at this price and had to research these mixed reviews first. It took me several weeks to finally buy a liter to be used as pain killer. Rum is healthier and cheaper than big pharma. I honestly cannot picture myself drinking too much of this one just to see if there are any ill effects on the next day. Probably not, because there appears to be no added sugar. This is simply a good and cheap gold mixer rum.
