Gold of Mauritius Dark Rum is produced from molasses which is aged for 3 months in port wine barrels before being filtered, followed by another 8-12 months.
The Gold of Mauritius Dark Rum molasses is supplied by Grays Distillery, a wine, sprits and liqueur producer founded in 1935 in Mauritius that makes 6 million litres of alcohol each year.

I am not sure what exactly they did with this rum. Apparently, regulations allow for whatever they come up with.
The result is horrible. Not only is it way too sweet (lots of sugar added, I am sure of that), but there also is a strange note of nougat and some sickingly sweet milk powder. Plus there is a very strange (and very artificial) bubble gum note in the background, that is completely disconnected from everything else in this "rum". Reminds me of some sort of artificial nougat liqueur.
I cannot detect the coconut that everyone seems to get.
Luckily, I only got a 5 cl sample, which I tried mulitple times and which I am not going to finish.
It is so bad, it makes me think my batch might have been off. And it is not even cheap.
A gyümölcsösséget éreztem.
One of my rather cheap (35 Euro) favorites - quite distinct - if I ever would stop smoking - this one would bring me back to the Tobaco - be careful:-)
I think that this is a bit underrated rum.
Nice dark color in the glass.
For me it's very varied drinking.
In the nose I caught tons of sherry, some woody aromas and a bit of vanilla.
In my mouth I can feel sweet, nutty taste, then some toffee, butterscotch and just a little bit smoky taste.
Aftertaste is sweet, again just a little bit of oaky smoke and a hint of fruity pineapple taste.
For me it's very colorful drinking.
I like more tasty rums. This one was a disappoinment. The taste of alcohol is too noticeable. Beautiful bottle, looks good on the shelf but that’s just not enough :)
For it's price ~30 euro there is better choices than this. Nice color, strange but aftertaste has apple notes. Casual sipper
It has a slightly sweet/sour kind of bourbon hint to the nose.
"The taste is predominantly a very deep char which gives a sweet and sour type mouthfeel – again very similar to a Bourbon Whiskey."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
