Smells of brown sugar and vanilla. Robust body on the palate, smooth with the same flavors from the nose as well as some milder baking spices. Excellent sipper.

OK, I stayed away from this easy to obtain rum because of the name. It just seemed a little campy to me. I wasn't ready to spned $45 on a gimmicky name. I waited too long. This is indeed "some good stuff". If i had known is was produced by Foursquare I would have tried it a long time ago. Great distillery. So this has a tremendous vanilla and cinnamon nose. Very inviting. The opening is warm and loaded with toasty brown sugar and cinnamon. You can taste the charred barrels flavor in the background. Superb. It is sweet but not too sweet. very balanced with molasses and hints of clove. Nice mouthfeel, a little on the thin side. Warm vanilla and butter sets in. A light and spirited rum here. Bite is like silk. very sippable and in auspicious balance. Finish is long and gentle spice. I mean the finish is very long. Always the sign of fine craftsmanship. This is a fine sipping rum ladies and gentlemen. If this is what Bill McCoy was smuggeling in to the desperately thirsty, prhibition stricken Americans in the 1920's he must have bordered on the divine.

Rum was probably made in honor to Cpt. Bill McCoy who was a rum smuggler. I guess that Foursquare identifies with Bill McCoy cause of the lack of additives, sugaring etc.

Something different than other Foursquare's rums like Doorlys or regular Foursquare
It's more dry on the palate, bourbon cask is very noticeable.
Voltage is too low for me. Slightly watery rum.

Very dark color

Nose:
typical smell of bajan rum, spices, toffee, caramel, demerara sugar, dark molasses, vanilla, dried fruits, bourbon, oak

Taste:
Very dry, oaky, woody, leathery, piquant, plenty of spices, mostly nutmeg, black pepper supported with cider wood, cigar notes, Maduro&Habano cigar leaves

Finish: short to medium

too watery for me, finish is too short nevertheless one of the driest bajan rums that I had an opporunity to try.

Cheers

Like many folk, I really enjoy Foursquare's special releases but it's getting very hard to get them, and at £75 and up, I could really do with a cheaper and more easily available alternative, which has led me to this.

Smell is pretty subtle - caramel, brown sugar and toffee - not as distinctive as most foursquare products.
Taste is similar, with a sweetness coming from the barrel char, a bit of burn and a long finish.
Much simpler in character than Elysium or any of the ECS, it reminds me more of R L Seale 10 year old. That's no bad thing, but I wouldn't say it was any better and it's quite a bit pricier.

Having sampled a variety of rums I started to find I was liking Barbados the most and was excited to try an offering come out of Four Square. The price on The Real McCoy 12 is certainly not entry level but I had been burned by another rum in this range so it took me awhile to give it a go.

Wow, what a treat. To be honest in my tasting experience it reminds me a lot of my Privateer Queen's Share. The barrel notes on the nose give me a light firewood feel and the taste finish is buttery to me. I'm not great at picking out flavors but I really feel like occasionally I get some coconut taste in this one. I think the standard vanilla, and brown sugar notes are there in taste also.

So far, in my 20 or so rums tasted this is my second best rum ever. Very excited to try more from the Four Square distillery including branded Four Square offerings.

It was interesting taste testing this against Plantation 5 as another aged blended rum. Side by side the depth of this rum stands out as well as the sugar added to the Plantation. I also tried it against Flor De Cana 12, although I realize that is column only, and man does that rum seem thin next to this. Even at the same age.

In the bourbon/scotch-like category, would get buried in cocktails and not overly complex, but a solid rum sipper. N: almost scotch-like, butter and oak. More subtle than most other rums. T/F: lighter spice and molasses, ends quite sweet. Not overly complex, but tasty. Toasted oak dominates.

I was quite hesitant to try this one since I heard that it had heavy barrel influence and was on the drier side of the spectrum. I walked into a local liquor store last night and seen this little gem on sale for $37.99, apparently it was old stock that they were trying to move. I thought for that price i'd give it a try. I got home poured a glass and let it sit for around 15 minutes. The aroma pouring out of the glass was remarkable.Creme brulee, honey, coconut, leather, and tobacco. It is on the drier side and does have alot of cask influence but it's not overbearing at all. This has alot going on with it and I never got tired of drinking it after 5+ glasses. Great mouthfeel. This would suit a whiskey or bourbon drinker who wants to dive into rum. It has one of the most interesting finishes I've experienced in a long time. The more I drank it the more I enjoyed it. I ended up drinking half the bottle the night I purchased it.My only regret is I wish I had tried it sooner. This will likely replace El Dorado 12 yo as my daily sipper. 8.5/10

A bit better than Doorly 12y, but also pricier, the McCoy sports typical Bajan nose of mixed tropical fruits, mainly citrus, oak, some hints of chocolate and spices, rich, spicy, fruity taste, followed by oaky tones and long spicy aftertaste with a pleasant sour twist at the end. Compared it with Doorly 12y side by side, McCoy is a tad spicier, bit more charred barrel in it, a bit more depth, but in principal very similar profile of scent, taste and aftertaste - it is the same distillery after all. Compared side-by-side with Foursquare Sixty-Six 12y: it is very similar, the depth and richness is on-par to me, the only difference I can recognize is the charred barrel component and sour-mash-like ending of the taste profile. Considering McCoy is some 25% more expensive - Sixty-Six wins it here for me. Nevertheless - this is a must-have (or must-try if you will) for all Bajan rum enthusiasts.

This rum has hints of vanilla, oak, caramel notes, and a bit of bourbon-like qualities coming from the the barrel. This would be a great rum for a bourbon drinker or someone who likes Foursquare.
