This Secret Treasures bottling by Fassbind AG is a rum from the closed Gardel Distillery on Guadeloupe. The rum made from molasses was made in the column style in 1992 and was allowed to store for about 11 years. The Single Cask was filled with 42% drinking strength. It is limited to 1401 bottles.

The rum has a wonderful nose, which changes over time. At first I found the rum fresh and almost a bit flowery, but after about 60 minutes this is no longer noticeable. The rum has a nice fruitiness, but is more characterized by woody spice, vanilla and floral notes. A medical note is definitely noticeable. The whole thing is difficult and invites you to extensive nosing. On the palate, the rum is woody and dry. Again a lot of spice with vanilla and roasted aromas. Tannins make the rum a bit bitter without throwing this very balanced rum off balance. At the end the rum becomes more medicinal and unfortunately also a bit thin. The aftertaste is woody and slightly astringent.

A truly outstanding rum and Gardel seems to have made great rums. Also reminds me more of Trinidad than Guadeloupe. Unfortunately the rum is a bit too thin. It doesn't get warm enough and lacks a bit more body on the palate. But do I want to mess with a legend? Many thanks to vomi for this little present!!

Gardel 1992/2003 (42%, Fassbind, The Secret Treasures
Barrels #4, #8 & #121, 1401 bottles, Guadeloupe)
Today I have another legend in my glas. The Gardel distillery was closed 1992 and this is maybe their last distillation. The taste reminds me of trinidad rum (medical notes) mixed with Savanna (grains) and Clarendon rum.
Nice complexity at just 42%, the nose is quite intensive, but in the taste the dilution is noticeable.

The taste starts with grains, some sweet sugar cane and a little bit medical. There are also some Bourbon wood aromas and vanilla. After that the tannins are rising and I get more grains and mint. After the rum became warm there are dirty notes like leather/tar and again a medical note, some orange peels also.
The finish starts spicy with medical note again and grains. At the end you get leather, great.

A beautiful rum, without dilution it would be around 90 points I think. With this dilution it's still not bad but can not compete with current Velier Last Ward or Caronis in cask strength. Therefor 82 point.
I love the dirty notes in the finish, I think Gardel produced a great rum/rhum, but this is now history.

Nose: sugar cane, grains, leather, clove, earl grey, some banana, anise
Taste: watery taste, sugar cane, grains, vanilla
Middle: leather, tar, medical note, mint, orange peels, tanins/wood
Finish: spice, medical note, grains, tanins, mint, leather, tar

Sweetness: 2/5
Fruits: 2.5/5
Spice: 3/5
Mildness: 3.5/5
Complexity: 3.5/5
Value (120€): 3.5/5
