I bought this in Mexico on a whim looking for Cuban rum since I can't get it in the states easily. Especially for what it cost there (about $13 USD) it was a great purchase. Easy to drink and not the most complex rum I have had, but in a cuba libra or el presedente it was a solid choice.

Yikes smells strong, similar to rubbing alcohol. Luckily it tastes better. However it is s bit like bacardi in that it isnt too sweet but doesnt taste particularly good either. Wouldnt buy again, but it works like a charm at a wake, if thats your occasion.

Just went back from all inclusive vacation on cayo Guillermo, Cuba. That was full of sun, fun and sure of rum.
Even there was literally nothing included from the premium sorts the all those Anejos were fine and scored:
Santiago de Cuba Extra Anejo - 7
Cubay Anejo - 7
Santero Anejo Oscuro - 7
Havana Club Anejo Reserva - 7
Santiago de Cuba Extra Seco - 8

The Extra Seco (extra dry) has exceptional taste compared to all those spiced. Light in color, very dry and pretty smooth, I liked it a lot.

Sorts from bottom line are too sharp with pronounced alcohol and are OK for cocktails only:
Havana Club Ritual - 6
Havana Club Anejo Especial - 6

The choice for more matured sorts:
Cubay 10 - 8
Havana Club 7 - 8
Santiago de Cuba 11 and 12 (only in Cigar bar) - 10.

Bought in hotel store Cubay 1870 Extra Anejo - 9.
Its profile is very similar to Cubay 10 - just more smooth and somehow more complex.

What I bought home and did not try yet: Santiago de Cuba 20. I have to report that all the sorts were less expensive (10-15%) at hotel's store then at the airport. So that is not the duty free, but "extra duty" stores.
Finally, what was "window shopped" only (- USD):
Havana Club Tribute 2019 - 555
Havana Club Union - 420
Havana Club 15 - 195
Cubay 1870 Extra Viejo - 133
Selection de Maestros - 55
Pacto Navio - 55

Happy New Year!

Starting the bottle I was suprised by the good smooth taste. After a couple days already the aftertaste got worse so did everything a couple days more. Alcohol burns sourly and little complexity. Still can make a good mixer though.

Diluted to 38%, the only reason is usually to save taxes. So I don't have much expectations.

Nose: In the nose are the bourbon cask aromas. Bright wood, vanilla, some sweeter notes of white fruits and some flowery notes. There are more heavy cask aromas deeper in the glas. It's like a Panama rum ;)
Not bad at all, but nothing special.

Taste: Watery impression first, the dilution is too strong. Then rise of vanilla, with some paper, white fruits like melon with flowery aromas and some orange zests. It's like combination of star fruit, melon and paper. The finish is a little bit spicy and still flowery (star fruits with aromatic notes).

Conclusion: The dilution is too strong, but this rum is not bad at all. I like these flowery notes.
I think it's pure, some hints of sugar syrup would possibly increase the intensity.
Would be much better at 43% I think.
Therefore 66 Points

Sweetness: 1.5/5
Fruits: 3/6
Spice: 2/5
Complexity: 2.5/5
Value (14โ‚ฌ): 3/5

I added some sugar syrup and the intensity increases with orange flavor. But the dilution is still noticeable. But still not a bad choice for that price.

Only a couple rum producers in Cuba so seem to supply the same product under several different brand names and price points. Cubay anejo has exactly the same taste as Havana Club anejo.Very good rum for the price.

I can see many reviews here referring to the sweetness of the rum which leads me to the conclusion that many mistakenly reviewed Cubay Anejo Suave here. Cubay Anejo is quite recognizably the younger brother of the delightful Cubay 10y. The smell, taste profile and aftertaste is similar to the 10y, although not so elaborated, but for the price it is more than I would expect. The nose is leather, oak and tropical fruits, ended with aged calvados scent, the taste is smooth, toffee and fruits, with a bit of oak, black tea, aftertaste is mild toffee with black tee, ended with a lovely spicy tobacco bite. This is balanced, unsweetened, light but crisp and for the money surprisingly smooth and complex rum. The more I compare this to others, even much pricier rums, the more I appreciate the fine scents and flavors of this little darling. Since I discovered Cubay Anejo, I keep myself well stocked with it.

I love the taste of this. More on the sweet side with just the right amount of burn. Typical liquorice and molasses flavours. Easy to get carried away with.
