J aime beaucoup ce rhum bien boisé, et bien épicé. Veilli 2 fois dans des barils de bourbon. Un petit goût de vanille. Je le conseille vraiment.
Good rum mixes well and packs a punch at 43% can get this for £30 or less at the supermarket. Makes a lovely rum and coke and goes well in other cocktails also. The black barrel referring to charging the barrels first i gather
Tried this side by side with the Mount Gay XO and this was a clear winner with the charred casks adding more complexity and flavor. cinnamon and vanilla spice, very unique. Great value.
Mount Gay Black Barrel is a traditional rum from the island of Barbados it’s a limited édition.
It’s a mix of rums from pot stills and old rums distilled in a column still.
The whole is refined in American oak barrels which previously contained bourbon and which were deeply burned in order to allow the wood to reveal its aromas.
The whole process delivers a rum that is both balanced and highly flavored. In the mouth we can smell the vanilla and the woody aromas. It is a very elegant rum!!!
Pretty good for the price, is worth it.
The nose feels like a good Bourbon, delicate and fruity aroma, and some vanilla.
The tasting is a little bit alcoholic but not overpowering, with some vanilla and caramel. Add a touch of water and this is where it shines, bringing some banana flavor. This is a new favorite for me, looking forward to other Mount Gay expressions to compare with this one.
Soft aroma of molasses with hints of sweetness and vanilla. Pepper. Alcohol. Warm on the palate, soft sweet character with soft fruitiness and hints of vanilla and oak. I don't get the big char barrel character that some get. The finish is dry and long with lingering bitterness. Not super complex. Good flavor. I'd use it as a mixer. Great pure rum flavor without too much barrel character to get in the way. Not a great sipper in my book but on the rocks in a pinch wouldn't be a bad thing. A great rum for what it is. Good value for a good quality rum. $26 for a 750ml in Ohio.
Coming from a person in their early 20's, this is a nice change of pace from Captain Morgan, with a nice price tag as well. One of my go to drinks when I'm at the liquor store
Good rum, smooth neat but also excellent with Coke.
Considdering this was easily availible in my local supermarket it did not fill me with confidence. My previous experience with Mount Gay was Eclipse, very sweet and too much vanilla for my liking.
After reading some reviews on here, looking for something less sweet, something with less vanilla flavour, a little darker, but still well within the "Carribean Gold" taste genre and within an acceptable mixing budget I thing I struck Black Barrel Gold!
My intention with this is to mix with ginger ale on a 50/50 to 30/70 mix, a few drops of bitters and yup. It ticks that box firmly.
Don't get me wrong. It can easily be enjoye on the rocks and the subtle tastes of caramel and oak are the first to come out.
There is another, more expensive, offering from another brand that brings more to the table for my mixing, but is no good for sipping so looses out on that.
Versatility, check.
Value, check (£20 to £25 at my local UK supermarket!)
I might keep a good few of these in stock.
A nice balanced Bajan nose with a little extra spicy kick to it.
"Sipped the Black Barrel certainly gives some of the oaky notes of a bourbon but also makes the mouth water."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

A nice rum with a great aroma of oak and vanilla along with aged leather and subtle tobacco notes. Great as a sipper or a mixer if you want a little oak barrel dimension to your cocktail.
