Thanks so much for submitting a report. It has been emailed to the Rum Captain and will be actioned shortly.
Captain Morgan Private Stock rum is produced from molasses and aged for over 2 years in ex-bourbon barrels before being blended with spices.
The Captain Morgan brand was created in 1945 and named after the famous pirate and eventual governor of Jamaica Captain Henry Morgan. The rum's original home was Puerto Rico with it was distilled by Seralles, but is now St Croix.
By far, my favorite rum! Every few months I make sure to grab another top-shelf brand and have yet to find anything as smooth, spicy, and perfectly sweet as Private Stock. Reading the other reviews, it almost seems like people simply refuse to rate this highly because it's not aged (and expensive), and Captain is known for mixing... stop letting the money you spend influence your opinion of something. No, I'm not 18 and just started drinking, and I'm well aware of how people like to make claims of "complexity" in flavors to justify the high price tags... I also enjoy a nice robust cigar from time to time with some nice brandy or cognac, so I get the draw to certain really strong developed flavors.
But I also understand the psychology behind giving a product a higher (or lower) rating based on the price tag of the item, and I think that's what's going on here... There are some aged rums that have average ratings at 9 or higher, with their less-aged counterparts scored one point lower. the truth is, it's rare to find a single point of difference in aging something 10 more years. Sure, more age can make it smoother and a little more refined, but in all my personal taste testing I've rarely found something that costs twice as much that was actually 10% better... Really old rum that tastes like crap, is just "really old rum that tastes like crap" that you just spent a lot of money on and feel the need to justify the expense. This is GREAT rum, and it's affordable. Excellent for sipping neat, or on the rocks... for something a bit different, put it in your snifter and light it on fire to heat it up a bit! (maybe 10 seconds).
All that said, I am well aware that individual taste preference is a matter of qualia. My point is... This is by far the smoothest, best tasting top-shelf rum I've had to date (out of about 20 diff top-shelf options). don;t let "price" influence your review.
Seductive scents of banana, vanilla, nuts and spices fills my nostrills with delight.
Spice and sweet molasses hits the pallate and surprices me with an unexpected roundness.
Always considered the captain to be a mixer but this one is a great sipper.
This rum is hard to beat for the price and availability. You can find it pretty much anywhere. Sure it isn't aged for 50 years and all fancy pants. Its smooth, sweet flavor is still awesome!
Are there better Rums....yeah. Are there better Rums for $22....not really.
This was the first rum I enjoyed straight when just starting out. For the price its really hard to beat. Very drinkable and good for mixing also. I do not however like any other Captain products. I still keep an extra 1.75 around for guest as it generally keeps them away from my more pricey stock...
This is one of my favourite Rums to mix with Coke.
This has to be the sweetest rum in my collection. Im not a big fan of Captain Morgan rums, for me they are bar rums. But this one is a great surprised, at this price point its a great sipping rum. If you are new to The rum scene this is a good entry level rum to start your collection.
There is always a bottle of Captain somewhere in my house and from time to time this one appears. It was a more elegant flavor than the original. Sip or mix it can be whatever you want.
This rum did not taste the way I thougt it would. This is actually very very good. Quite sweet, but very nice
I was pretty much surprised how good is this rum. Actually it is nice for sipping and mixing too. It's not very complex or special taste but it's nice simple and straight drink. Considering the price it is one of best rums considering value/satisfaction ratio.
All the hype with very little on delivery. I found the rum to be sweet with vanilla and spice flavors. I was disappointed however it is a good rum to serve when entertaining.
This has been a staple at my house for years as a decently-priced mixing rum. Sweet, spicy, and rich, can be used in any recipe that calls for a spiced rum. Its the only CM product i've bought for several years; the small price difference between this and regular Captain Morgan is an easy choice for me, noticeably better spiced rum, for only a few more dollars. Winner!
This is a very drinkable one.. Sweet and smooth.. Always a good choice
This is a nice rum you can drink straight or pollute with soda or juice. It's worth every penny and I love it!
I have a lot of shit rums for mixing in the house but this one has a special place.
I like to drink this one pure and as well is an a mix (if a feel like I need extra sweetness).
If you enjoy CM spiced gold, this will blow your mind.
Nice smmoth rum. Perfectvfor sipping neet. Vanilla notes.
This is one of my standard bearers for a good ole fashioned rum and coke. Much smoother than its younger brother and equally obtainable, it is the definitive choice on an evening with friends. Easy to throw back and forget how many you have had.
I'm not going to write a long one here. I hope you like vanilla because Private Stock is a vanilla bomb of epic proportions. It's sweet with loads of sweet brown sugar and dark molasses notes. There is a but of a nutty goodness. I get lots of baking spice especially in the finish, mostly nutmeg and hint clove. Private stock is sweet spicy and easy to drink neat. I can see people mixing this but it's a waste. This is a sipper that tastes above it's price range.
Sugar: 45- 50 gpl. Not much to say about this but if you read the label you will see that there is a lot of sugar added to this rum to where it is close to being a desert rum. It's got a bit of vanilla and caramel and spice in it and overall I would say that it's agreeable to those that don't like rum without cola. Don't mix this with anything sweet. I suggest that you put it on ice, or on ice cream. It's a good value rum, but I like a little or a lot more taste.
Captain Morgan trying to break into the upper end of the market. Good , just not great.
This one has taken me totally by surprise. I will admit to thinking that Capt Morgan was just a cheap mixer, until that is I came across this little beauty.Whats not to like about it:
A proper bottle with a proper cork,
Beautiful dark rum colour,
Aroma of all things rummy,
Super smooth with very little burn and a long lingering aftertaste.
If you haven’t tried this, I would suggest that in a blind tasting, as in “ pick out the Capt Morgan”, you would be very hard pressed to do so.
It compares for smoothness and taste with rums costing much more and dare I say it, from more established distilleries.
Do not insult this with anything other than ice/water.
Try, you won’t be disappointed.
This is my brother-in-law's favorite and I've never purchased a bottle for myself. I give it to him as a gift and simply drink his. I have not tried sipping it and it is not on my wish list. I like the cork thus the high rating.
This used to be something around my friends that if you had a bottle everyone would flock over to get there hands on it... but now that I have been drinking rum in a total separate realm Private Stock reminds me on sugar laden rubbing alcohol. Give this to your "friends" who are just going to add Coke to it anyway.
I've tried about 20 spiced rums and this is my favorite. Not too much vanilla, nor alcohol burn. This is what I reach for to drink neat, or with an ice cube. For mixing its very good but drunken sailor is my choice for mixing as it has a lot more vanilla ( a flavor I enjoy)
