It's really not that good honestly. It's simple beyond words. Its 85% oaky 10% vanilla and some sugar and trace other things. The bottle is nice to have in the cabinet but really it's nothing special. Honestly buy 2 bottles of brugal anejo. They taste identical except brugal has a slight less oak flavour. Drinking this straight is alright. Slight burn but nothing bad. Honestly Brugal is made in Dominican Republic and so is this. It would be no surprise to me if this was made in the same place using the same formula as brugal just in a different cask. It might be slightly less smooth than brugal anejo. But for 20$ less I would take brugal. I also could just add sugar to my brugal and it would be this at a large cost savings. I give it 8/10 because it's drinkable straight and I like the oak flavor but it's still nothing flashy. It's just good, not great, not memorable. Just good. Much like that movie you saw a month ago that was "good" but not that memorable, what was it's name again?
Tastes are always personal , and I’m not good on a lot of tasting , but to me , it has a smothness to it that I never encountered in rums before ,
Right out of the gate this rum starts off with a very sweet and pleasant aroma. The taste however is a little lacking. Even after sitting a while there is still a slight bite to it. A fine drink for sure, just not one of my favorites.
I’m sitting at the table trying to decide my final thoughts on this rum. It is a bit thin upon pouring and somewhat bland with its aroma. Upon tasting this beverage, notes of oak, cinnamon, and molasses. Slight warmth at the end... Kind of reminds me of fireball and water, at the end of the night. Nothing great about this rum except the price. Smooth enough but no kick or noteworthy notes to the pallet. Don’t think I will be adding this to the collection...
Not as complex as some, lot's of real molasses flavor. Easy and smooth straight up or drop an ice cube.
Mmmh. Nice lovely rum!
Best dominican rum i have tasted.
I highly reccomend it
I finally got my hands on a bottle of this today and now I thank my fellow reviewers for recommending it to me! It was the last bottle on the shelf and my persistence has paid off!
This is another rum from the Dominican Republic that I would buy again. Yes, it is sweet, with notes of cinnamon, caramel and vanilla. There is no after burn going down the throat, but a release of a few complex flavors that I can't pinpoint. Super smooth without being dry. I would compare it as being a notch slightly below Plantation XO 20th Anniversary. The aroma is pure cinnamon! And supposedly, this is what good Cuban rum tasted like before 1959.
And after several weeks of breathing in the bottle, the complex flavors have revealed themselves to be mint or menthol. So much for my bottle of Angostura 1919 being alone in that category. This only shows that one cannot judge a rum based upon the first sip out of a new bottle and almost all ratings need to be adjusted with time. At a bar, it is okay to judge on one sip because it has usually been breathing in the bottle for some time. My rating still stands at an 8 for this one.
Vizcaya VXOP
Cuban Formula Rum
Cask No. 21
Aged 8 Years
40%
Country of origin: Dominican Republic
Blended
Colour: Chestnut
Nose:
Very sweet reminding of Punschkrapfen (Austrian Punch Doughnut), red glaze and marzipan. Furthermore there are notes of candy floss and strawberry jam with fudge and toffee. More and more vanilla with cinnamon are coming up.
Palate:
Not as sweet as expected although there is still some sweetness with fruity notes at first mouthfeel. Smooth and soft, light, slightly spicy and smoky. After some time the sweetness is replaced by spiciness (cloves, black pepper and green bell pepper).
Finish:
Medium long with herbal notes, slightly dry and bitter.
Mild heat on entrance. Smooth, but a little bland. Makes up for it with it's pleasant fruity finish instead of that overly spiciness many rums have.
Vizcaya VXOP 21 used to be one of my favorite rums for years, but then I gradually built my Top 30 list and after well over 1,000 aged rums later, Vizcaya VXOP 21 barely sits at the Top 50 list in the current state. It is very good rum, definitely more on the sweeter side, good value for money and hardly any burn. I think this is a rum which you can enjoy one glass at a time. More than a glass and it's too sweet for sure. Bottle design is spectacular. It looks exactly like Cubaney Centenario 25-30y from the same distillery, Oliver y Oliver. The flimsy cardboard box could be easily ditched.
I have tasted this some time ago, but what I remember: Smoother than 12 yo. Very good stuff. Can recommend this one.
Sampled this rum which is very smooth but the flavours are somewhat underwhelming when compared to other rums in the same price range ($101 CAD in my area). I also found it a bit too sweet for my liking.
Another amazing Rum, sweet, ultra smooth, lingering finish!
Very nice vanilla warm sweet nose... perfect! Strong vanilla scents. Sweet rich body. Alcohol quickly fades out. Sweetness that is too sugary. Long great aftertaste... perfect... it could be a bit richer body...

This rum is incredibly sweet but not cloying. It's very smooth (I had it neat) and I imagine it mixes very well. That said, I'm part of the group who would say that this lacks in some complexity and isn't quite as distinctive or memorable as other rums.
This may be one of my favorite rums from this area. I have learned that this can not be my bench mark for judgeing all rums. The price alone made it a category all its own. This one had a beautiful silky smooth texture layered with an bitter vanilla and creamy caramel. This is an amazing rum and as I have used in numerous times as a suprise rum in my tastings it has never not been well recieved. I am not sure if whoever posted the 1rating is a rum fan.
After a long day at work and in most cases well into the night, I'll relax with a quality rum poured neat. The nose on first glance was exciting.... even interesting.... but the first tasting was not remarkable. The second, third tastings.... well, let's just say it started getting weird. I am not enough of a trained taster to make an in depth analysis, but I'll close by saying cotton candy and plenty of ice.
